Qudoc Pty Limited launched the beta version of its experimental legal search engine today, www.qudoc.com.au, a search engine designed for lawyers and anyone interested in finding legal information.
Qudoc uses purpose-built algorithms to search the internet and automatically retrieve only web pages which are talking about Australian law. It has the ability to look at a website and determine which pages are talking about law and which ones aren't.
Conventional search engines such as Google aren't suitable for legal research as they bring in too wide a pool of results. On the other hand, many lawyers don't have access to expensive legal databases supplied by the big legal publishers, or find their highly specialised search interfaces don't provide the ease of use they're after.
Qudoc bridges this gap by locating quality legal information on the internet and consolidating it in one place within a simple, intuitive interface.
Qudoc goes one step further than conventional search engines - it automatically filters legal information into categories such as subject, jurisdiction and so on, saving research time. It uses another set of purpose-built algorithms to show citations between documents. For example, with one click you can find the latest secondary articles from that cite any given section of any given Australian act or regulation.
Qudoc's simple, intuitive user interface removes the need to attend training courses. If you've ever used Google, you can use Qudoc.
Qudoc is currently searching legislation and journals from AustLII and 1,915 websites for secondary material (law firms, information providers and so on). We plan to rapidly add more primary and secondary material.
